VALUE BEYOND ILLUMINATION

Our dynamic facilities in the heart of London, Somerset and Chelmsford specialise in lighting specification, design and manufacture. Being based in the UK enables us to have complete control over our production operations and provide high-quality products with exceptional services.

As a product manufacturer within the lighting industry, we recognise that we have a responsibility to promote a greener future and we are committed to our journey in embracing a more circular economy, contributing to the lighting industry’s progression.

At Formation Lighting, we follow a lifelong approach that considers key factors during our design and development stage, helping us to improve each product’s life cycle from its raw materials to functionality and reusability. These strategic design decisions influence every stage of our manufacturing process, serving to minimise the effect on natural resources and the environment.

OUR KEY PRODUCT DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS:

  • Compliance with environmental legislation.

  • End of life functionality.

  • Maximise the percentage of recoverable materials: reusable, reworkable or recyclable.

  • Design products with reduced overall weight, decreasing carbon at the source.

  • Where possible we source materials and components locally, reducing overall emissions.

  • Use materials with as much pre-recycled content as possible.

  • Use less dense raw materials with low embodied carbon energy and reduced material extraction.

  • Only use packaging that can be recycled or is compostable after use.

  • All packaging materials is FSC or BSI ISO14001 EMS approved.

  • All electrical components are made easily accessible and can be serviced or repaired in situ – serviceability.

  • Design for lifetime optimum performance by only using high-quality components.

  • Include standardised light source components for interoperable future replacements – future-proofing the product.

  • Look to create the best for efficiency and reduced power consumption.

  • All structural elements are designed so that new technologies can easily be integrated – upgradability.

  • Incorporate intelligent lighting controls or sensor options to prevent unnecessary energy wastage.

  • Offer human-centric lighting integration for healthier lighting environments.

All our clients take full advantage of the investments we make in our design and developed stage. Our energy-efficient fittings deliver perfect illumination and are sustainable throughout there operational life. We also offer components in our products that increase energy-saving further including intelligent lighting controls, dimming modules and occupancy/daylight harvesting sensors.

Carbon-free Aluminium

Aluminium has always been the leading choice for sustainable product development due to its lightweight, strength and infinite recyclability.

Tighter legislation around emissions will push producers and manufacturers worldwide to focus on decarbonizing their supply chain and processes. ELYSIS™ technology takes the miracle metal’s sustainable advantage to a new level. It provides a unique solution for drastic reductions in the carbon footprint of many products used in our daily lives, including transportation, construction, electrical and consumer goods industries.

ELYSIS™ technology has the potential to reduce the annual GHG emissions by approximately 7 million metric tons, which is the equivalent of removing 1.8 million cars from the road.

In addition to the environmental benefits of the carbon-free aluminium smelting process, the use of ELYSIS™ technology improves occupational health and safety, reduces the capital intensity and operational costs while increasing productivity and eliminates the potential exposure to carbon pricing mechanisms. It is intended to transform the global aluminium industry, both for retrofitting existing smelters and for new installations.

ELYSIS’ team is currently working to refine the technology, aiming to have the technology commercially demonstrated in 2023. Until then, ELYSIS will continue to share its progress on the development and deployment of the ELYSIS™ technology to enable the global aluminium industry to take this new path towards a sustainable future.

In summary, the ELYSIS™ technology will eliminate all CO2 emissions and replace them with oxygen, bringing improvements in occupational health and safety, reducing the capital intensity and operating cost while increasing smelter productivity.

formation is now working to integrate these materials into every product possible. We aim to move forward with reducing our overall emissions throughout our company and every process.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRODUCT DECLARATIONS

To support our circular approach, we use a range of assessment tools to calculate our product’s lifetime environmental impact. We use an EPD to support our product design decisions and to declare our products embodied carbon. EPDs are mainly used within the project design stage to compare environmental calculations and performance. The EPD standards are governed by ISO 14025 standards, EN 15804 and specific product category rules that provide a transparent third-party verified assessment. The scope of our product EPDs covers a cradle to cradle assessment, including raw materials, production, transportation, use and end of life.

• Product (A1 – A3)

• Assembly (A4 – A5)

• Use (B1 – B7)

• End of life (C1 – C4)

• Recovery (D)

CIBSE TM65 AND TM66 REPORTING

We offer TM65 and TM66 reports for our products. They are CIBSE published algorithms and frameworks to quantify a product’s embodied carbon or environmental impact. The methodologies and assessment tools allow us to produce accessible reports to help specifiers to make environmentally informed product choices.

RETROFIT

We also offer a retrofit product range for existing linear lighting systems. It provides an LED component upgrade solution by replacing the conventional lamps, ballasts or old LEDs with new technology. There are many benefits for retrofitting luminaires, including lower upfront costs, improved functionality and reduced material waste. Making the switch to LEDs can also lower energy consumption by up 75%, and since LEDs have a long lifespan, fewer materials will end up in landfills.
